Report: CEO: EU can replace Russian gas with Ukrainian power

MOSCOW, Jun 7 (PRIME) -- The E.U. could replace up to 10 billion cubic meters (bcm) of Russian gas by importing electric power from Ukraine, energy company Naftogaz Ukrainy CEO Yury Vitrenko told Bloomberg TV on Tuesday.

The official said that U.S. liquefied natural gas would be insufficient to replace Russian gas in the short term, but a combination of measures, such as higher energy efficiency and a search for different energy sources, including a temporary increase in coal and nuclear energy, could reach the purpose.

For instance, electric power exports from Ukraine alone can replace up to 10 bcm of Russian gas, Vitrenko said.

He also said that gas supplies from the Middle East, for instance, Iraq, can allow the E.U. to stop buying Russian gas.
